Discovering Ascot Vale

As the home of one of Victoria’s largest venues – the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds – Ascot Vale, Melbourne is at the heart of the city’s event culture. However, just focusing on the big events it hosts overlooks the suburb’s charm and the lifestyle living in Ascot Vale affords.

Much like the British racetrack it’s named after, Ascot Vale has had a long connection with horse racing. While Melbourne’s own Ascot racecourse was converted into government housing and parkland many decades ago, Ascot Vale sits between two of the major spring carnival sites – Flemington (home of the Melbourne Cup) and Moonee Valley (home of the Cox Plate). However, even if you’re not a racing fan, there’s still plenty to love about living in Ascot Vale.

Located about 7km north-west of the city, Ascot Vale is well serviced by public transport, with three tram routes (the 57 and 59 that will take you to the city, and the 82 that connects across to Footscray) that run until late, 7 days a week. There’s also the Ascot Vale train station, situated on the Craigieburn line, from which you can get into the heart of the CBD in as little as 10 minutes.

Green space is a major feature of the local landscape, with many parks in the area. Fairbairn Park, located alongside the Maribyrnong River, is the largest and has vast open spaces, plenty of walking and cycling trails, multiple sporting fields, and family-friendly facilities throughout. It’s also sure to be your furry friend’s favourite, with dogs allowed off leash.

Health and fitness is a big focus for the area. In addition to the facilities at Fairbairn Park, Ascot Vale is home to the Riverside Golf and Sports Centre, the Ascot Vale Leisure Centre, and a wide variety of wellness clinics. Given its proximity to the Maribyrnong River, the suburb is also well known for water sports, like fishing, rowing, and canoeing.

If you’re looking for something a little more indulgent, head to Union Road, where you’ll find an eclectic selection of boutiques, cafes, and bars. From the custom creations of Valoren Jewellery, to the allergy-free and vegan treats from Mister Nice Guy’s Bakeshop, to the craft beers of Jimmy’s Tap & Barrel, there’s something for every taste.

While the presence of public housing estates may cause concern for some people, most Ascot Vale locals say they always feel safe in the area. However, many do note that increased traffic, particularly when large events are being held at the Showgrounds or Flemington racecourse, can make it difficult to get around.

Despite these minor issues, the suburb is quite popular with renters, particularly young professionals and young families.

If you’re interested in moving to Ascot Vale you’re sure to find a suitable property, with a great mix of period homes and modern apartments on offer. However, you should expect to pay a premium, with rents in Ascot Vale generally some of the highest in the city’s inner north-west.

Your Home Hunter loves the lifestyle and accessibility of Ascot Vale. So, if you want an easy community into the city and plenty of options for outdoor activities, Ascot Vale might be the suburb for you.
